Default 982 driveshaft upgrade

Just thought I would share the Sam Mac driveshaft upgrade on my 982. The original driveshaft had really been neglected and the splines were worn badly on the pump shaft. I already had it torn down to replace the hydrostat with one that has good splines and remembered that I had bought one of Sam's pump adapters and then never used it. I slid it on the shaft and it locked up nice and tight back on the better splines, so I opted for a 2000 series driveshaft upgrade instead of a pump replacement. Please note that you will need an adapter for the engine if you do this upgrade, as the Onan has a different bolt pattern than a Kohler. I'll post a drawing of that later. I also added a fan from a cyclops for better cooling. The new shaft runs true and has the added benefit of eliminating the ball bushings, rag joints, pinned on trans. coupler and requires practically no maintenance.

Looks good. I did the pump change (splined) and CV style driveshaft on my 782D. Nothing to worry about now.

Yes, the driveshaft had to be shortened. You just about need a lathe to do it. The 2/3000 series driveshafts are just a piece of dom tubing with the special ends pressed on and welded. You have to cut through the weld behind the end and then I bored the rest out. Next time I think I will just try pressing it out after I cut through the weld. After it's apart, it's just a matter of taking your measurement, cutting the tube to length, pressing the end back on and welding.

From the back of my engine where the adapter bolts on, to the front of the trans coupler was 23-7/8" if I remember right. From that, you need to subtract 1/8" (Sam's suggestion from another post) for some end clearance and 3/8" for the thickness of the adapter plate to get the assembled length of the shaft. When the shaft and couplers are assembled, there is a step from the face of the coupler to the end of the shaft. You need to subtract 2x that step to get the length the shaft needs to be cut to.
