Exhaust on LT1024
Someone gave me a LT1024 with multiple issues. My first foray into a lawn tractor.
1. Deck issue. Spindles are shot. Idlers are likely shot. Won't know till I get beyond issue #2. 2. Drive issue. Belt was chewed up badly. Attempted to replace. 3. Front end issue. Steering joints and plate worn badly. Drive pulley was seized onto engine output shaft. Went thru process of cutting old pulley off of rusted shaft. Ground rust off of shaft. Main bearing seal in fine shape with no leak. Have new pulley on with anti-seize, new belt on, PTO clutch on. Have it running fairly smooth but on my first drive around the yard without the deck, pulled back into garage and the bottom was smoking pretty good. The entire area was extremely hot to the touch. Pretty sure the previous anti-seize (if used) was 'baked-on' as I noted that the exhaust coming out of the muffler aims directly at the PTO, drive pulley and belt. There doesn't seem to be any guard or tailpipe to redirect the hot exhaust. Looking at the diagrams, there doesn't appear to be any reference to any sort of redirection. Since this was 'free' to me, I can say at this point I've only about $125 in parts, but I know I've got a ways to go with the deck, front end/steering parts, the bonnet (busted up pretty good, too) and at least one tire. I'll be out that unless I can part it out. Truly a basket case. Anyone have a clue on the hot exhaust blowing on the PTO/Drive directly out of the muffler? Thanks, Matt |

Does your muffler match #9 on this diagram. It looks like the outlet points to the front of the tractor:

Also check the 2 little plastic toe link bushings. I saw all those YouTube videos about worn out steerings gears but when I pulled miy well worn LT1024 all apart I found the pinion gear bushing and rack gear to be fine... but the $5 plastic link bushes were shot. Made a big improvement.
