Tiller gearbox grease
What does IH mean by fill with grease? How much do I actually put in this gear box?

They say "fill" so I would put as much in as would fit. Since you won't be adding it under pressure, fill the gear box so everything is coated in grease.

Thank You Jeff for the new parts for my tiller. They work great. I filled the box with #2 grease and 85/140 lucas gear oil to keep the grease from drying up.

Looks good as old, better than new! Let the tilling begin.

A tech and I had a conversation about lube in these boxes one day. He said he recommended the same thing that I had..... 50/50 grease and gear oil. I personally suggested (because it's hard to change) using synthetic. I have not changed the oil in any of my boxes as of yet, (they're full, and I just haven't done it) but when I do, they will get synthetic oil/grease in a 50/50 mix.
X2 on the looking good Keith!! |

Good to see everything fit well. Thanks for the order and the measurements to make it happen.

Most gear boxes used on agricultural and industrial equipment use just straight gear oil. If the seals are what they are supposed to be, it won't leak out. I am planning to build my gearbox this week end if my shaft from Jeff in PA gets here tomorrow. I'm planning to used only synthetic gear oil.

When IH changed the gear box from the three bolt pad to the four bolt they went to NLG "O" grade lithium EP grease.

Synthetic sounds good and should work just fine but I would mix synthetic grease and 85/90 or 85/140 synthetic oil together to keep the grease fluid and coating the gears. All the friends I have and myself own farm machinery such as brushhogs for instance and they all start leaking the oil, where as mixing grease and oil slows this down if not stopping the leak. The oil seal I purchased for my tiller box was cheaply made and 1/4 the weight of the seal that I took out. If you can find a quality seal like IH used 40 years ago the oil should not be a problem.

I have found that John Deere CornHead grease works wonders in these applications
Corn Head Grease Thins to gear oil when working; thickens to grease when resting.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
