3185 questions
dad has a 3185 here and i was wondering if anyone with the same unit or nearly the same has had this problem? you put a new air filter on it and it runs great mow the grass one maybe two times and its plugged to the point that its sucking oil out of the breather tube. install a new filter and its fine again and the old filters dont really look plugged. you can always tell when its plugged because it wont start. doesnt seem to use oil other than what ends up in air cleaner area plugs look great no signs of oil consumtion there. the machine draws cooling air from under the dash area where it is screened but air cleaner has grass in it as does top of motor and hood hinge area. how can grass be getting up that high has anyone had this problem and if so how did you cure it?
admins if this should be in engine section go ahead and move it

Does your machine have the air intake tube from the engine to the firewall? The driveshaft goes through it.

Yes, #27 is that piece. I'm not sure if that will solve your clipping issue but it will run a lot cooler with that piece in place. With it removed it will suck the hot air off of the top of the engine rather than the cooler air from below the dash panel. I guess you could draw some clippings up into the engine pulling air from there too. I've owned five 3k machines and 4 of them were missing that piece.
#28 is the first piece I asked about and it is a must have too so that's good you have that one. Looking at the air cleaner & carb diagram, do you have #26, the air duct? Is the screen clean on the flywheel?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
