Default Kohler K301 cylinder head cracked?

After a thorough cleaning I was able to see the surface of the underside of my cylinder head. I saw what seemed to be cracks, but I’m not sure. What can I do to ensure these aren’t cracks?

Looks like a casting line to me. If you warm it with a small propane torch, often oil or fuel will sweat out of a crack on cast metals.

You need to get all that crud off the head and sand out that line.
Maybe even polish a bit.
All that roughness will build up w/more carbon deposits.
Kohler suggests removing the head and cleaning as part of their maintenance regimen.

Read into flattening the head. Though I prefer plate glass over tempered glass because it is flatter. Thicker the better.

That’s a good read. I don’t have any plate glass, just 1” think machined granite. It’s about 3 ft.² and came from my grandmothers house.

I bought a cheap piece of glass from Lowes to do mine. Worked like a charm.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
