Default Steering box gasket thickness???

hi all,

I bought this gasket and wondering if its thick enough b4 I install it. It looks like the metal lip would hit before the gasket gets to compress. But maybe I got it figured all wrong...

Model 123 Nov 2020 Hydro needs much work, or resto, building front end loader for this one
Model 100 Feb 2019 apart for total frame-off / sandblast etc resto

Model 70 Sep 2020 needs total resto and an engine, or for parts
Model 70/100 Mar 2021 buried in rust, frozen engine, got free for parts.

Last time I worked on one, the lip of the cover extends down over the side of the aluminum case so it doesn't stop any compression of the gasket.
In any event it's only grease, not oil, and it's not under pressure unless you pump 10 lbs. in there.l

Yep... no worries. It's certainly not there to seal anything under pressure that's for sure. Chassis grease isn't going to go anywhere fast even with just that wimpy "seal"

The gasket piece should be a foam gasket.
They are nla from Cub Cadet.
The early John Deere garden tractor used the same steering box-assembly.

John Deere part numbers are
Retainer-M45569

Same here only used thin sill sealer foam.
Best to clamp the ass'y in a vise, attach the steering wheel and then adjust it for best firm feel w/o binding.
Be sure and run it back and forth through several cycles while adjusting for best results,
