PTO bearing and collar
I removed the PTO from my 149 in order to adjust it and replace the bearing. I used a three jaw puller to remove the bearing, but I can't get the set screw on the collar to budge. The replacement bearing comes with a new collar, but can I just leave the old one and install the new bearing?

You need to remove the old collar. You're not going to be able to get the new bearing tight with the old collar there.

I see. There is only so much force that I can put on the set screw with 1/8" allen key. I left it soaking in Kroil last night. We'll see later.

I took a closer look last night and realized that I had to loosen the lock nut for anything to happen. Once I got a wrench on it, it can apart easily. The new collar came with only a short set screw and no lock not. Should I use the old, longer set screw and lock nut on the new collar, or just go with the new set screw?

I have just a set screw in my locking collar, and I haven't had any issues. The locking collar I replaced had a longer set screw and locking nut, it was not reusable after I took it off. That's how they were installed originally, it's mentioned in the service manual.

I have a 1973 149. What parts do I need I order to fix the wobble? Here's what I've found so far... Anything else I would need? |

I think you would have a lot better chance of getting some help
with your project if you start a thread. This one is quite old. There is a load of info in the archives here that will help you with pictures and descriptions. There is also a manual in the library that shows the whole setup you are working on. Work through the parts website with link at the top of the page Also links to sponsers who will have all the parts. Pics are always a good thing to help us. Ken |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
