Original clutch woes
I just found and bought a Feb '61 Original. It runs great and looks pretty good except for some crappy over paint work previously done.
When I bought it the seller cranked it and drove it onto my trailer. All seemed well and I cranked it the next couple of days and rode it around. Then after sitting for a few days I cranked it and could not put it in gear without grinding the gears. I tried adjusting the push rod length but that didn't fix it. I have looked at the manual but an still unsure what to try next. Any tips or suggestions? Thanks |

On my original sometimes the clutch discs would stick to the pressure plates. I would just disengage them and separate them. Seems to work well now.

Thanks. When I get to work on it again I will try to unstick it/them. I forgot to mention in my first post that I had washed the tractor thoroughly after riding it around some. Maybe I got water and-or degreaser onto the clutch(s) because it's kinda open above the clutch for the belt to go thru?
If it/they are sticking hopefully turning the driveshaft with the pedal pushed will unstick them. I don't really want to have to remove the clutch assy and driveshaft because of the spring that must be compressed to disassemble and reassemble the unit. |

Mine will often stick after sitting. I just tap the pulley the belt sits in under the machine with the brake engaged and it pops right apart and runs just fine after that. I may have pried with a screwdriver before as well; I don't run it much and don't recall. It doesn't take much effort or time.

Yesterday, with only a short time to work on it, I jacked up the rear wheels, clamped down the pedal, and turned the driveshaft, thinking I would free it up. No such luck. I was in a hurry and now I think I might have been turning the engine too. I plan to try again later today and make sure the engine doesn't turn, or lock the driveshaft with vicegrips and turn the engine?

Joy, joy. I got it working again. After clamping the driveshaft so it couldn't turn and turning the engine with the starter it still ground the gears.
So I readjusted the pushrod back to where it was when I started plus about 3 turns. It works fine now. Guess I adjusted it the wrong way the other day? |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
