K321 Governor
Getting everything ready for pulling season I was running my motor the other day and when in gear the motor is either at idle or wide open I was told it was the governor needed adjusting but after trying to adjust it today the shaft free spins it doesn't stop so I'm assuming the gov. is broke is there a way to bypass it or if anybody has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated don't really have time to tear the motor down at this point

The tab has broke off the shaft, All you can do is pull the engine and replace the shaft.

You may also want to replace the bushing it turns in at the same time to lessen the oil leakage around the shaft. Just did this on my 1450. or....you may be able to carefully weld the tab back on the shaft and save the original one, just make sure you orient the tab back on the shaft the correct way. At any rate, this will require a major engine tear down. Good time to take care of house cleaning in there while you are at it and check clearances. I was able add a .005" shim and bring my cam end clearance back up to spec. Sure hoping this will quiet the ol' AQS down a little!! Good luck!! |

And that tab is probably floating around in there some where.
Sooner or later its going to get flipped into the right spot and cause more problems. |

I was hoping for a simple solution to my problem also, but after getting the engine out and on the stand, with the pan removed, you can barely see the tab or the shaft. I could see no way of removing and reinstalling it w/o pulling the crank etc.
The governor gear and cross shaft are the 2nd step in re-assembly and nearly the very last to come out in a tear down. |

Guys I am sorry. I don't have any idea where my head is today. Yes, that is correct finsruskw. You have to disassemble to get the cross shaft in/out.
Lost my credibility today. I was thinking about the gear. It can be removed and installed without disassembly. It has been discussed on here before. dvogtvpe has done it. I've never tried. Doubt the cross shaft would come out, but it may. You can pull the nut/bushing and have a look-see though. If the tab is gone, the cross shaft will come out, but it will be tough to get in with the cam in. |

Ok guys. I did it. I just went out, grabbed a motor I had sitting. You CAN get the cross shaft out without disassembling the motor. You just need a magnet and a screwdriver. Turns out I didn't give bad info.
It actually only took a couple minutes. It was pretty easy. |
