782 Running Issue, Intro and Pics
Hello everyone, I have been lurking here for a while and trying to absorb as much info as possible from this great site. I Have a 1450 beat up work horse and it has treated me well, but I always wanted a 782. So this weekend I bought a 782 that had a rebuilt KT17 series II with a carter carb. I did not run when I bought it, so I spent today rebuilding the carb, replacing the condenser, points, plugs, fuel, fuel filter, oil, setting timing, setting carb to factory specs. It still ran like crap and wouldn't rev and was missing on the left cyl. I found that the intake gaskets were backwards and it had a massive vacuum leak as a result. I made new gaskets and now it does not have the miss anymore but it still will not not rev without the choke being on full. I cleaned the fuel petcock, replaced the lines, tried with the fuel pump hooked up and with the carb being gravity feed. Adjusted the timing advanced and retarded from the s mark on the flywheel. Adjusted the carb all over the place and I still can not get it to run higher than idle with out it dying. I checked the governor adjustment ( I think I did that right) it seemed good. I have been searching this site for ideas and have tried what I have found.
I am pulling my hair out over this problem, any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks I have now added pics further down. |

It sounds like you have the atmospheric vent plugged. Make sure that there is a clear passage from the vent on the carb to the carb elbow. Not all elbows and carbs work together because the vent configuration is different. Also, if you made a new gasket between the carb and elbow, you may have covered the vent.

I made a new gasket that had the proper hole for the vent, that is weird that the gasket did not have the hole for that vent, the gasket did not look homemade. Now it runs like a champ. The previous owner must not have been very good at proper gasket installation between that gasket and the backwards intake gaskets. I just love buying someone elses unfinished project! I guess one good thing did come from today, now it has all new tune-up parts and I know a lot more about the kt series engines. Thankyou so much Matt for your advice, now I can mow with my new tractor tomorrow.

I worked out the 782 today, It ran flawless and the hydro worked great. I am so relieved that I did not end up with internal engine problems. Here are some pics of my two tractors. I still have some work to do to the 782 like ag tires, installing the sleeve hitch, and replacing the deck belts.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
