Default Possible 147 purchase?

Hello folks, Im new on here and have an opportunity to buy a model 147 cub. It comes partially restored, paint and some new parts etc. It has no mower deck but was bought with a snow thrower as that was going to be the only purpose with the intent of getting a deck later. The seller has passed away and his widow is selling his collection of cubs and has one that she is keeping and the last is the 147. He put new bar tires all around last year with chains, rear wheel weights and a cab. His son tells me he bolted the clutch plate solid because it kept shearing the the pin???. Anyhow the snowthrower is engaged as soon as the tractor is started and the PTO is engaged. I believe I can fix this but have a bigger concern about price. By the description, is it worth $1200? It also has a big box of parts that goes with it that includes an elect. lift kit with a couple extra elec. motors and some PTO parts. It runs good but is hard starting in part I assume is that it is trying to work the PTO as it cranks but seems to be a strong engine when running. I know that value is in the end my decision but would like some input from some of the pros on here before I put out the money. I am willing to put money into it for my own upgrades or fixes. Wife wants me to have this tractor because of health problems and she doesn't want me on my cub MTD 1022 with the blade in the winter. Cold air is too hard on my one diseased lung, Need some feed back, thanks, Tom

Tom

$1200 seems high to me for a partial restore job, and clutch problems. Condition and location effects price. Got any pics?

I picked up my 147 at an auction and its prolly in worse condition than the one your looking at but everything works as it should (except for the charging sys.)

It included a deck, rear lift, cultivator, brinly sleeve, and disc for about $1000 less than the one you looking at.

But location plays a major role in price.

Bought my 122 with the 38" deck only for $300. It runs great and everything on it was original, right down to the Starter belt. I recently saw one listed on Craigslist in SW Iowa that came with a deck, blade, and snowthrower for $500. Thought it was a bit low for that package. No idea about the tractor's condition. I'd say $1200 is high.

Boy,
I don't know what part of Iowa you are in, but around here, that's high IMHO. If you can post pics, that would be great. By the condition described with a snowthrower, no deck, and PTO issues, I'd guess in the $500-700 range?????? That too may be a high guess. But $1200 is way too high. Good luck and keep us posted with your decision.

Default RE: possible 147 purchase

Thanks forthe input. I had a gut feeling that it was a bit skeptical on the price but was told that the blower should be worth nearly that much. I think I will hang in there and look for something for less money. I appreciate the replies and will check in from time to time for some interesting reading. Glad I found this site, I do like the old cub cadets though.

I just bought a 42" snow thrower a few weeks ago for $80 in decent condition. Now that was a great price, but usually a QA-42A is worth about $200. I would wait, or offer $500 IMHO

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
