Default Finally...

After many years of obsessing over anything IH.. I FINALLY have a Cub of my own. I've owned 3 Bolens so I'm not entirely new to garden tractors, however this Cub is a whole new animal to me. So much simpler compared to a Bolens.

So here it goes... I put up an ad looking for a Chb Cadet tractor on CL, OCC, and a few other places. I received an email from a guy saying he has a few Cubs that he would be willing to get rid of if I wanted to come look. Come to find out he was less then 10 minutes from my house.... I loaded the trailer up and off I went. I was greeted by 4 Cubs and 6 Ford GTs. So we get to talking and I check out a one owner Cub Cadet 104 he has sitting in his tractor shed. I take it for a ride and we start talking tractors some more. After quite some time of chatting the gentleman looks at me and tells me if I come with a trailer tomorrow(today) that I can haul the 104 away FOR FREE.

At this point I was probably glowing like a school girl who just got asked to prom, but I couldn't hide it. Went today and picked it up. The tractor is by no means perfect but does run, drive, and mow with no major known issues... yet. Tractor does not smoke, and supposedly doesn't consume any oil.

My first question leads me to the clutch/brake pedal. The pedal has a lot of play in it however it does work the clutch appropriately. Is there anyway to make this pedal tighter by tightening some sort of linkage? This is the first thing to fix on the list of things I'm going to do with the exception of normal maintenance.

Pictures attached and will attach pictures of the clutch parts that I see have a lot of play using a diagram for reference.

Not bad for free. Leaves you a LOT of room in the wallet to fix it up.

Congrats on your first Cub tractor.
As you know, that's how the obsession begins. I'm not going to get into the whole clutch adjustment procedure here. Just download the service, or owner's manuals, and it'll explain the procedure there, better than I can here...

Okay after reading the manual it says to adjust it with the nut which should be rather easy. Is it possible one of the springs is worn out and it will not allow for proper tensioning. If I adjust the clutch pedal is there any break adjustments I must make?

Nice tractor! Congrats!

Yes, that spring that keeps the peddle in the up position does wear out. You would be making up for the slack by adjusting the clutch. I don't think I would do that if everything is working correctly with the clutch.

Here are some views of your clutch setup.
Most likely your slop is being caused by a weak or broken clutch compression spring. Also inspect the pivot point for the clutch lever and clutch yoke bracket. Also, the area on the dash tower where the yoke bracket bolts to can crack or bend and let things mal adjust. I agree with johncub7172, adjusting for lots of slop is kicking the can down the road. Better to find the cause and fix it now.

Very helpful illustration. I'm going to go with worn out parts, I just need to inspect it at some point when this rain stops. The clutch pedal almost rests flat with the foot rest, but it does work the clutch rather well.

I know the bolt at the top of the clutch yoke is one that someone changed out because it's about 4 inches long with quite a few washers and a bolt.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
