Ltx 1042 courage 19 hp blew up

So I’m new to this forum...

I was wondering if anyone successfully repowered their ltx 1040? My Kohler Courage 19 hp just blew a hole in the back and I’d like to put a better motor back in. I’ve done quite a bit of research and know that a another courage is not an option. Some may laugh that repowering my cub cadet is silly but finances aren’t really there for a new mower... the rest of my 1040 is in good condition. Anyway, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I did get to the 12th page of threads back and saw someone put in a Briggs 12 hp but was slightly underpowered.

Should not be all that hard to fin a replacement. Just match up the mounting. This is what the Kohler is.

So I’ve contacted my local cub cadet dealer and he’s looking into what engine I can Repower the 1040 w. Also I took apart the courage today and found that the counter balance is what blew apart and put a hole in the back bottom starter side of the block. More research found that they have changed the counterbalance set up 3 to 4x from the original design... I’ll keep this updated w what I find out and move forward w.

I put a B&S 19.5hp intek in my neighbors LT1042 last fall

it had the courage 19 in it, was basicly a direct swap, bolted right in
had to order a new drive pulley as original was rusted to the shaft of the kohler, shaft was same size, reused PTO
had to cut the flange off the muffler and weld on the one for the B&S.

the whole thing only took a couple hours
the B&S engine was out of my 2010 Mastercut (MTD)

Scott do you have a pic of the serial number for that exact motor?

only other thing I remember modifying was the throttle cable is too long, I just cut the end off and pulled out the cable and cut the outside where I thought it needed to be then stuck the cable back in and cut it down and rebent the end.
you also don't need the seperate choke anymore as the Briggs uses one cable for choke and throttle
if you have electric PTO you need the bigger alternator with a regulator or the battery will not charge because the PTO draws alot of juice.

I think you could use about any single cyl engine, I currently have 2 Kohler's, a B&S opposed twin and a B&S vanguard and all 4 have the same bolt pattern and shaft size.
I replaced the Intek 19 with the Vanguard 16, tight fit but the vanguard runs smoothe as silk compared to the single cyl.

So I screwed up the thread title. My cub is a ltx 1040. PTO is not electric. I pull the lever and the belt engages the pulley on the drive shaft. This is my first time getting into a small engine. :/ please bare w my dumb questions that may come up. Is the HP number a direct connection w speed and performance? To clarify does a 15 hp twin do a similar job as say a 19 hp single.
