Default Steering Broke!

well its way too cold to deal with it, but while moving a trailer (with another cub in it!) (which also doesnt steer) I heard a snap, and the steering wheel just spins around. It's not the drag link, its inside the box maybe. What usually goes in there? Is there a heavy duty upgrade?

Just askin here, cuz its too cold to take it apart just now..

I would guess, because you state that the steering wheel can just spin, that the cam follower may have snapped, That or the pivot shaft for the side plate.

The cam follower is a pretty easy part to replace as it screws in, side plate and pivot shaft not so much. You'd need to find a complete used replacement.

Best you can do is take it apart and find out!

I had that happen on my 122. Not as lucky as you, I was in the middle of main street downtown using it for handing out water before a parade started. There was a loud stiff snap, the steering wheel started spinning freely, and even pulled up out of the shaft about two feet.
I opted to replace the whole thing, and when I got the old one out I decided to dismantle the broken one out of curiousity. I pulled out a bunch of stiff old grease, a few loose ball bearings, and some metal shrapnel. Let us know what you find when you get into it!

Can you lift up on your steering wheel and have it slide up? If so, it's the shaft itself.

Hard to imagine the follower snapping. I just ordered a replacement (see "Rabbit hole" thread :-) ) . It would seem one of the strongest parts of the chain of events, but I suppose it's possible. The box itself can break too as it's cast aluminum I'm pretty sure.

You guys are making me go down the rabbit hole now...

With all this steering talk, and my 107's dash tower already removed, I may as well pull the steering box for a quick rebuild while I can, right?

Certainly wouldn't want it to break on me while I'm in the middle of something... right?
