Default 1872 Cracked Rear Casting

Well, an unfortunate start to spring. Last fall, my hard steel hydraulic pump failed, and I said I would just deal with is this spring. Having looked for replacement lines, I see they're nowhere to be found, and nobody around me makes steel hard lines anymore. (even at the farm/ag shops, it's all rubber)

Anyways, I made my own lines and after re-installing I noticed that there was a significant amount of up/down movement in my rear end at the flex-disk/shaft. Upon further inspection, I found that one of the front tabs/ears from the casting for the rear end/pump etc. has broken. Enough play that the bolts on the flex plate have worn thru the one new line I made last fall, and it's spewing fluid again.

Does anyone have any ideas of either A) a good repair/fix such as braces.. (Not sure there's enough material to try and braize/bronze it back on) or B) a 'parts' rear casting I could scoop up. While I know eventually this thing will go down the road, it's not in the pocketbook to replace it right now.

(I'll not even bring up the leaking seals in the steering pump assembly right now)

I'll try to get some photos in the next day or so once I can get it out of the shed and into better light

Thanks in advance.

That is very common on the SGT's. Our member Sam Mac designed a rear brace kit the will take care of the broken front tabs on your machine.

Xtreme sells this kit now. You will need the SGT kit.

I had the same issue on my 2072. I TIG welded the broken piece back on and put a set of rear braces on it. You do not need to repair the broken tab if you use the brace kit.

You need to check all the bolts that hold the rear into the frame with a torque wrench set at 30ft/lbs.

Well dang, THANKS Oak! This is exactly what I need, and had thought about something like this myself after I made my post.

I'm far from well versed in the differences between GT, SGT etc, so I'll take your advice and pick up the SGT kit off the xtreme site, and maybe the steering pump kit off Messick's and make a big mess out of things.

i can vouch for the xtreme brace kit. i have one on every super that doesnt have a 3pt on the back of it. and even then, one of my diesels has both the 3pt and the braces. well worth the money.

Thanks for the tips all. I got my brace kit and got that installed, new fluids all around. Interesting enough, I'm not having my leak on the steering pump (which typically happens on a warm day about 1/2 way into my 3 hour mowing time)

I've got the Steiner kit just in case, but maybe the old Cub will stick around a few more years! I got my first mowing out of the way w/out any issue, so now that I've topped off the frost heaves, it's time to sharpen those blades. Mowed on Tuesday, and it could really use it again!

I bought the brace kit, going to install tomorrow, along with the 3-point kit.
the brace kit came with two pieces that are almost square. Where do those go?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
