Default 125 Front axle loose

I’m in the process of rebuilding my K301 at the moment, so I’m just checking the tractor frame (125) and other areas now that I have access to it. I pushed it back yesterday evening and noticed the front axle wiggles when you turn the steering wheel. Is there a part or procedure to cure this? I attached a pic of the area with excessive play circled in red.

Common issue. If it's all still original, there will be a small pin to drive out which releases the pivot rod, which in turn simply drives out. Now the cast iron piece can drop away. One option is to put a large nut/bolt through the axle holder and tighten it up to pull the U-shape back together. Do this until it fits snug again. It will spread back apart over time with only the pivot pin, which is why some go with plan B:

Get a grade 8 bolt with nylock nut, tighten her up and just leave it in. I had just enough clearance for my K341 and I think with some careful grinding it will clear the quick release handle as well.

Thanks I’ll try the first option.

On the narrow frame, I use calipers to measure the amount of squeeze when relaxed, this was helpful for me in getting the axle back into place.

Check condition if the pin and the bushings it rides in while you are at it.
If the bushings are worn severely, you may consider replacing them as well.

Be advised, they are "spun welded" in the 'C' channel and and a TOTAL PITA to remove requiring a sawzall and chisel.

fins, could you have a machine shop bore it out and press in a bushing instead?

In the axle, if needed, yes.

In the C channel, no, they are welded as mentioned above and the C channel is an integral part of the tractor frame.
New bushings for the channel are available as are new pivot pins.

Also check all 4 tie and drag link ends for wear as well as the steering gear itself for slop, most of which is adjustable at the gear box.

Also the steering knuckles and wheel bearings
Good luck!

I used a much smaller bolt than I intended to. I was working one evening and didn't want to go for a longer beefier bolt than I had on hand. I was totally surprised by the bolt that I used, it did the job. 5/16"?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
