K301 question
Hello
Well it looks like my 104 is acting up again I can crank it runs immediately cut grass with it for at least 20 minutes or more and suddenly it starts to run like it is under a severe strain and pours out black smoke i disengage the pto and it will may or may not stop running that way after a minute and I have continued on cutting with it when it went to normal once before and actually had times when it operated normally the entire time. I had an issue with the S/G and the bearings were freezing up but i fixed that issue and check it each time the engine act up and the rotation is normal. I have not checked the head bolts yet, that may not be it at all. I always run the carburetor dry then turn off the key so I'm not sure that is an issue. Is this a common issue with this engine? Thanks for any help

Sorry I my engine is a k241, I checked the coil and it showed to be in the operating range according to this sight and I trust Roland and his diagrams.

Exhaust/Intake valve sticking in the open position possibly causing loss of compression? May need to pull the head and check them out. Black smoke would indicate excessive fuel.

Thanks DX3
I have not done anything to the motor yet but cut all my grass yesterday and it did not give any trouble. I think I'll run some marvel mystery oil it it before I take the head off and see if it might help rid it of that carbon.

I ran the 104 today and it started acting up today & died with my son so I cranked it back up & squirted mmo in the carburetor and it worked normally & I did this several times when the engine would bog down so I think the valves are definitely sticking. Thanks for the help

Hello
Well I think the 104 wants to stop for the winter. Thank you for help with trouble shooting the engine it had a strange thick build up of carbon on the half of the piston near the valves and clean on the other half of the piston. The valves had lots of carbon also . It ran fine . I put the old solenoid back on and the crazy thing cranked right up......Once... and then the pto disc desintegrated. Well I'm not sure where to begin with the electrical but I guess I'll go through the entire system. Thanks again for the help

I had the same issue on my 128 when i swaped motors. It would run for awhile than start to strain and backfire. But what i did was i have the coil on it from the old 8hp motor that the PO bought at Autozone than i swapped coils than it was fine.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
