1811 smoking and general watch-outs
Hey guys. I'm looking at an 1811 for sale. The owner said it runs but it smokes. I put new rings in a 12hp k301 last summer, it was pretty straight forward. My question is how much more complicated is it refresh an Kohler m18?
Also, I've completely gone through two 1250s and I feel like I know what little problems to look for in the quiteline series. What should I look out for in an 1811 when I go check it out this weekend? Thank you for any advice you might have. I love this sight! |

What most everybody does is repower with a Ch or a vanguard. Look for a donor tractor like a 2000 series cub cadet. I repowered a 782 with a CH20 and love it.

No such thing as an engine "refresh". It's either overhauled, or it's not. I wouldn't even call re-ringing a 12hp K series anything other than a waste of time and money.
Terrycloth is correct, M18s are too cost prohibitive to rebuild. It may not actually be junk though. M18s had a habit of breaking the Reed valve on the breather. Pull the air filter and see if it's full of oil. That will tell you. Also, blown head gaskets can cause oil to be burned. Look for leaks. Not much else to watch out for other than obvious abuse and wear. 1811's are about one of the best GTs Cub ever had! |

Ha! Well put J-Mech. ...But a guy's gotta start somewhere. That k301 was the first engine I've ever torn into, and I had fun doing it.
Thanks for the quick responses. I'll be sure look for leaking head gaskets and oil in the filter. Anything else? I read something about the carb sticking and flooding gas into the engine, thinning out the oil. |

That can happen with a lot of engines, not just the M18. Fuel pump failure can do the same thing.

Pull the dipstick and note the level. Do the sniff test on it too. Should smell like oil, not gasoline.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
