I need an engine for my Original
Hi all.
I am brand new to this forum. I have recently acquired an early original, serial number 5884. My dad bought in new. It's been sitting in an old garage for the last 45 years. At that time my brother decided to "fix it"...there is currently no engine that I can find. I do have the starter/generator with it's bracket, and I have the gas tank with mounting straps. The tractor seems otherwise in very good condition, a seat full of acorns from the squirrels but it's been out of the weather, paint looks remarkably good. I would love to get it going again. We never had a mower deck. It has a 3 pt hitch (I remember watching the mechanic install it when I was 6) and I have a Brinly disc that we used to keep weeds controlled on the lakeshore. I am mechanically inclined and a logical thinker, and good with my hands, but to date my skills have been more developed in my woodshop. I do have a local mechanic who is willing to assist as I need it. I'm going to need to find a replacement engine with all the appropriate add ons such as air cleaner, etc. Any ideas of where to start? thanks! I'm excited for this project! Bjorn |

If you want originality your going to want to look for a Kohler K161 7 HP, that was the engine they came factory with. If you don't mind as much about originality, you can also put a Kohler K181, 8HP, in it.
The air cleaner was originally an oil bath type.

First, welcome to OCC..........
The original engine was a Kohler K-161S-28542E 7 HP. That may be a tad bit hard to find. Patience and diligence will be in order. As stated by CC107, that Cub Cadet updated that engine to a K-181, which is 8 HP. You can check with our Sponsors (Houtz & Patton) at the top of page, you can place a Want Ad in our Classfied section, and search the Internet.

George, if you want to consider selling that engine, please let me know. I'll place a want ad. What a great site! |

I have one. Where are you? I'm in N TX, and travel in the western US quite a bit. Don't know anything about my spare engine except it has compression, and is the right model. No air cleaner, or gen.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
