Spark plug thread repair
Just a quick post on fixing a stripped plug hole. I never really like heli-coils, and on a spark plug it seems they never work. This isn't new or anything, but I have found on the bigger motors I work on, even on an aluminum head, it works well. So, repaired my head with it tonight. You can get a kit to put a steel insert in the head to repair the plug hole. It's about as easy as installing a heli-coil, but in my experience, it lasts longer. Get the kit, follow the directions. It's pretty straight forward. Only thing I do different is I use "sleeve retainer" Locktite. I think it holds up the the heat better than red Locktite.
Here's a pic of the head after it was tapped, with the tools lying beside it. SPR1.jpg A pic of the tools, and the insert. The insert is knurled at the top. After installing it, you hit it with the "punch" supplied in the kit to lock the knurls into the head and keep it from unscrewing when changing spark plugs. SPR2.jpg Here's a couple with the insert installed. SPR3.jpgSPR4.jpg I really don't see any reason not to repair a head with a stripped hole. The parts for these things aren't getting any cheaper, or easier to find! |

Threaded inserts are far better than heli-coils especially if the fastener or spark plug or what ever has got to be removed numerous times. As far as I'm concerned heli-coils are a one time deal. They are my last choise for thread repair. Nice job on the head repair Jonathan

I've been using those inserts for several years now. They work well. I also like using the pipe plug method for Kohler heads.

Thanks for info. I've used helicoils many times and they've failed a few times. Didn't even know about these inserts, now I'll check em out. Good stuff.....thanks again

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
