Default 1512 Maintenance Questions

I feel silly asking these two questions, but I've not found the info elsewhere yet...

I have a 1512 diesel despite being a Wheel Horse nut. I bought it to resell, but ended up falling in love with the stupid thing and now I think it's earned a permanent spot in the barn. It's probably going to follow me to work this winter so I can plow my workplace's lot on those rare St. Louis snowfalls...and I won't end up smelling of small engine exhaust.

Anyway, it is really in need of some preventative maintenance and I can't find the following items in my manuals:

1. What oil filter (Kubota, CC, Fram, Wix, Whatever) does this thing take? The one that the PO used is a Mann filter with an illegible number and I don't know what to cross it to. (Seriously, where does one even find a Mann filter in the US?) As far as I can tell, it ain't in the Owner's manual either.

2. How do you change the hydro fluid in this? I've heard the fluid is pricet, but I don't care what it costs since it needs to be done. The OM has no procedure and I read elsewhere that these typically only get a filter (um, I don't have a number for that either...) and a topoff.

I have 40+ Wheel Horses spanning 60 years of production and this one Cub Cadet, but I can fully see hunting down a few more of this style. They seem to drive really nice, the diesel is smooth and quiet, and they seem to be built like brick outhouses. I'm not sure it actually uses any fuel. Implement changeover is a bit cumbersome, but if a 782D, 882, 1572, or 1772 presents itself I can honestly see showing a couple of 'Horses the door...

Thanks,
Steve

Oil filters for Kubota D600:

Kubota 70000-74034, 70000-15241
FleetGuard LF3403, LF3462
Napa Gold FIL1334
WIX 51334
AC Delco PF1127
Purolator L14459
Baldwin B179

I would recommend Shell Rotella T 15W-40 for oil if you aren't already using that.

I would also recommend using Power Service (or similar) diesel fuel additive if you are using the the new diesel formulation, as the new stuff doesn't have very much sulfur in it, and the sulfur lubricates the injector pump. It still would be a good idea for winter use as it has some anti-gelling stuff in it.

There's a drain plug on the trans by the suction line. Drain it, remove the rear cover, clean all the crap out, put the cover back on with a new gasket, and refill with 7 quarts of IH Hytran (can be obtained from any CaseIH or Case heavy equipment dealer...cheaper in bulk) or the CC hydrostatic transmission fluid for the older machines. It's cheaper through CIH or Case. Use only a Cub Cadet (723-3014) or Fleetguard hydraulic filter.

Matt, what about a Wix 51410 for the hydro?

If it's a hydraulic filter, that's probably fine. I basically meant to stay away from oil filters and Fram filters.

I know Hytran is used in the older machines, but when or on what models did Cub switch to the Semi-synthetic fluid?

I believe the 2000 and 3000 series use the newer fluid.

Matt,
If you don't mind the price, can the semi-syn fluid be used in the older machines?

No. It is not compatible. Use the older fluid.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
