Default Red Original?

I got an original at an auction for $10 and everything is red, even the extra parts that came with it. Was there any originals that were red?

The rear end has a broken axle, the hub broke off, 2nd and 3rd gears are out. Do I need to get original gears and axle or will other cub parts interchange? Will a rear end out of say a 102 work?

None of the originals were red unless you have stumbled across an early prototype.

CCO's had a 16 tooth second gear and 102's and up had 19 tooth seconds for the most part. They will interchange but the k161 probably won't pull it.

The axle is unique to the CCO. I am pretty sure.

Tater,

You will have to get a rear end from another Original.

Thanks Randy and ACecil.

The serial number is 24857 so I think that makes it a '62.

I can get the gears cheap. Do I have to use an axle out of an original or will it interchange with anything else?

The right axle might interchange but the left has the brake on it so I don't think so. Its been awhile since I had the rear end apart in my CCO so I don't remember for sure.

I don't think they are tough to come up with though.

As Randy said Original axles are all by themselves.

You say 2nd gear is out... Is that the 2nd/3rd 16/26 slider or is it 36 tooth actual 2nd gear?

If it is the slider... Sorry, if it is the 36 tooth I want to go put my hand on it before I say for sure, likewise with the axle.

If it is the slider, then you may have to pay out the nose for it, I saw one advertised (and sorry, I don't remember where) last evening, I think they wanted about 90 bucks for it. You can get whole transaxle on epay for less than that...

I should also mention that the Original axles are the same from side to side.

I'm not sure if the previous owner said if 1st/2nd or 2nd/3rd gears are out. I'll keep looking for a used transaxle. Everything is tore apart or missing on the original, I'll slowly get parts and put it together.

Any chance we get to see a picture of this unit? Even if it is in peices all over your shop with many tags of "I don't know where this goes yet" on them!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
