Default K301 cover plate

Just got an K301 out of a 124 and swapped into my 108 the 10 needs a rebuild. Anywho found this plate bolted on the side below the S/G with3 screws. My father swears this guy never rebuilt this engine just had caught fire and had set. Now no oversize markings on the piston top, runs fine no smoke. I said probably rod damage to block he says no way! Now anyone ever seen any accessories that bolt on this area? I know mech fuel pumps are on the other side, so that's out! Ok motor runs fine cut grass yesterday other than a new carb, points, and coil condenser! Ok thanks for any input to settle this "discussion" ! LOL

Forgot one! Now looking through my Kohler manual I did not see anything but that doesn't mean anything I could have missed it, it was getting dark out! Thanks for any ideas

Well there is one on the other side? Did they come ambidextrous ? That could be think my 1250 has it on that side but don't remember a plate on the other side? IDK I will check tonight thanks!

My 1000's K241 has a dipstick tube that attaches to the side of the block at what looks like the same spot. If you didn't have that dipstick tube, you'd want to cover that with a plate. Looks like that was done?

Ok my QL bolts on there the same spot so u guys called! They use the cam cover fill tube maybe on models with S/G and when they eliminated them they installed that side? Weird they came up with that years before tho? I have to give it to my Dad it's his win! LOL any chance this block was switch from a newer cub and they plated the hole and installed the cam cover to work? Seems to me like that the extra hole would have been for a later model tractor not a 124? IDK still learn something everyday! Got to luv these Cubs tho! Hope my girls carry on with using them to! Well or husbands I guess! LOL

The cam cover dipstick would not be easily accessible on a QL due to the side covers. The tall dipstick tube would be. The newer QL blocks (AQS series) had electric clutches on them, so the blocks were drilled for them. That might be a give-away if the block you have is a newer one.

I suppose a mechanical PTO could be put on in place of the electric one.

Ya that's what I was thinking my QL has it where the plate is bolted on but there is the fill tube in the cam cover. So that's my point the older kohlers didn't have this 3 bolt fill tube hole machined and blanked off as on this 124 has the S/G on that side! This almost has to be a replaced engine in this tractor of a newer model! Thanks I'm just starting to get into these W/F and wasn't sure if the older
N/F blocks came with the oil fill available on either side! Thanks good for me cause when I rebuild the ten I still have a good 12 for my QL!

I have a friend who has a tractor with the same block-off plate on it. It is a 102 with a K301 engine. I was really stumped by it. I was glad to see this thread, so now I know that it isn't some "patch up". I am thinking now that it probably was a replacement short block,and the owner upgraded to the 12hp engine and used the 10hp head,tins,gas tank,etc.
