Default Cyclops Hood Hinge

I have a 1863 that the original grill housing broke years ago. My Dad took my tractor to a dealer for me for work to be done and loaded the tractor backwards on a trailer, the wind got up under the hood and it opened it and broke the housing. Long story short it's years later and I'm replacing the housing. I bought a housing from a guy with an early model 1863 grill housing, the headlight setup is a little different than my newer model, but other than that the appear identical. The problem I'm having is when I install in the hinge into the slots of the grill housing the hinge can't move much before it hits the inside top of the grill housing and stops. This obviously isn't right but I can't figure out what to do to fix my problem. Is there any chance they changed the setup from or might I be missing something?

This model was in production for about 4 years from 1993-1997

Check and compare part numbers in the parts book for the same parts is what I would do to see if the same part fits both models.

Many times changes are made during production for one reason or another and will/should be noted for those parts in the parts look-up.
.
Looks like there were 5 different versions of the 1863, took about 5 seconds to determine that.

1863 S/N 836,001 - 880,000 143-664-100 144-664-100 145-664-100
1863 S/N 880,001 - 899,000 146-664-100 14A-664-100

And a few more to discover this, Bingo!! What a concept!!

836,001 and up used part #931-3178
836,001 and down used part #759-3773

Ref:
12
759-3773
Kit, Grille w/Round Lamps | (Serial no. 864, 500 & below order 759-3773 grille w/round lamps kit)
This part replaces 759-3527.

Therein lies your answer more than likely

First, welcome to OCC......

The 1863 had two production runs. The hood hingle is different between the two.

Gather you chassis serial number up and write it down. Go to the Tab at the top of the page (Cub Cadet Parts & Service Look-up). Type in 1863 and the two production runs will pop up. Choose the run, that your serial number fits. Then go to the section (Hood & Grill), and there is your correct hinge you need.

There were only 2 1863 production runs.
The hood hinges are the same part number for both grills, it more than likely bent from the accident.

I went to my dealer over lunch and we couldn't any issue between the parts so the parts person took me out to talk to a mechanic. He can't tell for sure looking at the hinge but he said he'd bet that it's bent. Thanks!

Default me too

I have one just like it from a 2084. I tried to use it on my 1864, and had the same issue you did. Either it's different for the 2084 or it's bent. I suspect the latter. If it has the same issue on the 2084 I will rig something up to bend it out.

Default Hinge problem

Check to see if your hood can be adjusted so there is more gap between the hood and the front grille housing. You should notice that the hinge has holes that are oblong to allow for adjustment of the gap between the hood and the grille.

On the last tractor I restored, (1864), I remember fitting the hood and grille in relation to the dash tower starting by placing the hood and grille on the tractor with the nuts and bolts somewhat loose to allow for some adjustment. First, get a good fit on the dash tower, then adjust the grille housing forward or back to (you may have to shim the angle where the grille mounts to the frame to get things straight with the correct amount of gap.) Then, tighten the hood nuts to the hinge frame and check for correct fitment. You may have to make these adjustments several times until everything fits correctly. Be patient and remember to open the hood carefully so you don't crack it when you check for the proper gap.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
