Default Another 1450...

About two weeks ago I picked up this '79 1450 from auction for $99. It's not too terrible and certainly has promise. Came with one carb and one ghost carb which appeared on the trailer out of nowhere after I unloaded it (but they're both way worn out and not adjustable). Had mud dobber nest just inside the intake so I will pull the head and clear out the tenants when I get time but it does turn over. Hydro handle is loose and some parts of the linkage are stiff so it'll need sorted out. 3 out of 4 tires hold air surprisingly. Figured for the condition and price, it's a worthy gamble. Also got that 4' finish mower for 25 bucks. Cat 0 and missing two spindles and the gearbox but the bolts, pulleys and blades are still there. I'll do something with it (thinking small vertical shaft and use it as a mower to keep pathways open.

Nice buy.

You should enter it into October deal of the month

My 1450 was in bad shape when I first got it. I took me a while, but I conquered it. It is one of my favorite models and workhorse.

Keep us updated as you proceed with your project.

Thanks guys. I will definitely try to keep you posted on the progress. Right now the lift valve is stuck so I'm soaking it in PB blaster to try and free it up (my parts 1450 had the same problem when I got it). This one is so decent I think it'll stay (it does have side panels but I left them at the auction place and am going up right after the current auction since there's a few things I'm getting- figured might as well kill two birds with one stone)

The beauty goes deeper. Pulled the head off and it's really clean inside. No critters thank goodness, so now it'll be cleaning top of pistion off and new head gasket and bolts. Turns out the mystery carb is a carter 26 with the correct governor rod, so I will probably clean it out and try it (throttle arm is tight and moves nicely). Only thing wrong is the steering wheel has been booger-welded (seriously- it really looks like someone smeared it completely with boogers) back together and muffler flange is not too healthy. Also the brake latch has worn completely through the serial tag so a few numbers before the U are unreadable. But I do know the rest of the numbers telling me it's a May of 79 machine (which is newer than my 1250- October of 78).

Got what should be a 1650 with a 12 horse (or so the head tin says, need to take a peek at the muffler inlet to double check). Will be using this as my parts machine to fix some problems (like the steering wheel) and whatever else I find wrong with it. My brother seems to think he's gonna take it and fix it up but he's got another thing coming.

Since the 1250 I intended to use for blower duty let me down, I guess it's as good a time as ever to try and fire this thing up. Plan to do some swapping of tractors in the shed and get the 1450 closer to the shed (hard to work on a machine that's close to a mile away and make a hundred trips back and forth lol).

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
