Rebuilt 106 front PTO not releasing completly
I'm tring to start my 106 tractor with mower attached to test out the rebuilt PTO but it won't start because the PTO is not releasing completely, it's dragging. I held the drive cup from moving and turned the mower blade by hand and can hear and feal the disc dragging on the plates. Is this normal for a new clutch or is something wrong.
I followed the manual carefully when I did the rebuild. I didn't resurface the plates because they seemed to be fine before. Denny |

You may need to adjust the PTO rod to allow the button to put more pressure on the PTO to release it.

Thanks for the reply DWayne
I tried your suggestion and the amount of drag is pretty consistent no mater how tight I adjust the rod. Would towing it to get it started and putting a load on it by mowing a bit with the PTO disengaged to break in the new disc it be worth a try? |

Hmmmm I am not sure that would be advisable. Is there anyway of getting some nice close up shots of the PTO? Maybe someone here can see something that isn't right.

I did bump start it, and the mower belt jumped off. I put it back on and tried again with sucess. I disengaged the PTO and the mower stopped. I mowed my small yard and when I finished it wouldn't disengage again. I'm really getting confused now. I checked the wear button gap, and it is within tollerence engaged.

I could be way off, but I never disassembled one with any kind of anti rattle springs.
Was noticing how pretty the assembly is, and saw a ring scratched off pulley by these springs I never saw on any unit before. There is the drag in my opinion. Where did you get that sweet pto disengagement arm? Tough looking! Hope Im onto something with the springs and being helpful.

Yes it does look like the spring is sprung to me also. I would try to adjust it again, but I'm thinking it's toast.

Thanks to everyone's expert assistance, the old girl is now working like a charm again.
The anti-rattle springs dragging caused the pulley to shift so the set screw holes were about a inch an a half away from the slots in the drive cup. I was able to nudge it back into position so I could get at the set screws and removed the PTO along with the ARSs. If anyone needs some springs I now have six I'm no longer using. I checked the pressure spring adjustment which was good, and mounted the PTO back in place. I think the pressure spring is okay, the PTO is now releasing fine with no drag. william1041200... The disengagement arm was on it when I got this "FREE" tractor a couple years ago. I assumed it was original but maybe not. You guys would know better than this IH Cub Cadet rookie. It is definitely plenty beefy for the job it's doing. Thanks again... This one's on me. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
