K321 to K341
I have a 149 with a blown K321. I am still working on tearing it down for evaluation, but I have already identified two chunks broken out of the cylinder wall (see picture).
Based on this I have started looking at options for a replacement block. So far the only thing I have found semi local is a K341 with crank, cam, and head. My question is what parts, if any, are common between the two engines? Obviously I will need a new rod and piston. What else? |

It's common when a rod breaks for it to chunk out the bottom of the cylinder. It may not be bad. I've put them together, and taken them apart with lower cylinder pieces missing and they are fine. As long as the block isn't cracked, and the chunks are below where the piston runs, it's fine. Check that out before buying another engine.

Those are 1.250" Chunks! How much cylinder wall left under the scrapers and an expander ring?

I got the piston out tonight. I haven't measured it yet, but there is a definite lip around the top of the cylinder. The broken out areas at the bottom of the cylinder go to about 1/2" from the wear marks on the cylinder walls from the rings.

Eh...... I don't know if I'd run it. That's pretty close to the rings. Piston might want to cock in the bore on the down stroke with both those chunks out.
You can sleeve it..... You don't need to measure the bore. Everyone always want to measure the bore. Unless you own a boring bar and know how to use it, just let the machine shop measure it. It will need bored, I promise. They always need bored. |

Does anyone have recommendations for shops in the Binghamton, NY/Scranton, PA area that sleeve the old Kohlers?
