Default KT17 II Vs M18 hills

I understand why the KT17 series 1 has so much trouble on hills, but does the series II have problems as well?

Is there any difference in reliablity/longevity between a M18 and KT17 II? I never hear anyone complain about killing M18s because of high operating angle.

M-18's/Series II's have full pressure oiling so it mostly eliminated the oil starvation to the rod bearings.

I have a lot of hills that I run the tractor up and down, as well as along the slope and have yet to have troubles; all the hills are at least 1:2 or steeper as well. Mine is a 782 Series II.

Thanks for all of the replies.

My current plans are to run the KT17 II until it blows (hopefully a long time) then replace it.

I have a M18 that needs to be rebuilt and I might have access to a good used M18 or M20. If the KT17 blows, I've been debaiting should I go the Magnum route or should I replace it with a B&S Vanguard. I don't want spend a bunch of time and money on a Magnum if it isn't going to hold up any better than the KT17 II.

Also, if the KT17 II is really fragile on hills then I've thought about not even using the 782 to mow once I get my 1250 and 126 back running.

Someone correct me, but I think you are good to go with the K17 Series II engines on hills.

I met a fellow recently that had an old JD with the K17 Series I engine in it and I believe it was a high hour tractor - BUT, his yard was totally level!

I think you got a plan - run the K17 till it quits!

Good luck,
Bill

Here is a Vanguard listed on the Roanoke C-list you may want to pick up and put on the shelf for future use.

Thanks for the lead. It's tempting, however I'm going to pass on it because my wife will kill me if I spend anymore money on Cub parts.

In the past month or so I've purchased a nice 782, 46GT bagger, running K301 to go in a 126, new tri-rib's and 8.50 ags for my father's 122 and other misc parts.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
