My guess is something important and probably expensive broke in the tranny.

I guess I would pop the shifter/cover off and take a look see into the tranny. It will probably become obvious what the culprit is.

I pulled it off and everything looks normal the only thing I can figure by the looks of things is the shift forks were stretching and it was trying to come out of gear they were a little wide so I fixed it and we will see next time

if it did any damage it would have been to the 1st - R sliding gear (rear fork) not uncommon to break a tooth off since its such a small gear. its a good idea to weld the fork so it can't spread where the shifter goes in. also look at the fork. they tend to break on the underside where they fasten to the shift rail

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
