Are parts off an 1864 in demand?
I'm looking at picking up an 1864 to use as a donor. I need the engine and want the power steering off of it for my 782. My question is would it really be worth the time to try and part it out? I'm just trying to see if I can justify the asking price. The side sheilds and hood look to be in decent shape, and while the tin is rusty in spots it does not look to be bent up(from the pics). I know very little about cub cadets in general and less about the cyclops style. Thanks

FWIW: If the plastic is in good shape, it'd be worth reselling. Fender pan and gas tank, again, if in good shape, are worth reselling. The hydraulic valve under the dash is defiantly worth reselling. Those are just the parts I see potential value in, I'm sure others will be interested in other parts, as well.

I see you're in Illinois, are you talking about the one listed in Richmond? I don't know for sure but I think that may be the tractor I looked at around June-Julyish (it was on Clist in Woodstock at the time) - I started a topic on it- It was in absolutely horrible shape. I want to say I could have got it for 250, maybe 350, and there was just no way I was giving that for it. I'm thinking the seller must have gotten it cheap and gave it ALOT of TLC. I can tell from the pics the plastics were broken up, the extremely rusted fender pan, and the 830hrs are ringing a bell to me. I recall it had decent tires, and the deck had holes. It was with an 1863 that was even worse if you can believe it.

Yes that is the one I was looking at. As I stated I am mainly interested in the engine and the power steering. If that is the one you looked at do you know if those components were any good. It's three and a half hours away so if you could give me your opinion that might make my decision for me. Thanks for both of your inputs.

Ah, now that were all on the same page! That 1864 looks rough BUT it has potential. If it was.closer and I could snag it for 400-500, I'd jump. I'd keep the engine (assuming it didn't burn oil), keep the hydraulic valve, and depending on the plastic, part the rest. Lots of potentially good stuff there. Just my opinion, but the 1864 is one of the best garden tractors made; so if u can use the parts on another machine, go for it!
Have you talked to the guy at all?

The front axle is also a wanted item. You should put it on the 782 while you are at it. Super steer FTW.

Yes I've contacted the seller. He says the engine runs good no smoke and claims that it is mechanically sound. We all know though that opinions vary on what mechanically sound means. Lol

I'm not 100% positive but I really do think it was the one I looked at in the summer. NO WAY IN HE%& would I drive 3.5 hrs for that tractor. It's ten minutes from me as it is now. I don't see how he could make money on it at $600- it needed everything. Cables etc were froze up, plastics were broken (like everything) I recall some of the carb linkages were stuck. Steering was loose. It definitely sat outside for its life. The deck was close to junk as I recall, although he may have a different deck on it now. He's gotta have a huge amount of time into getting that thing into shape, not to mention I'm sure he had to purchase some parts and materials. I'm going to assume he got the 63 with it and made 1 tractor but I felt they were both only worth scrap price-and not the effort it would take to actually scrap them.
I was interested at the time for the PS for my 782, the supersteer axle, and mule drive for my 1861, and it just wasn't worth it. This ad has been up for about 1.5-2 weeks. I'm trying to figure out who the seller is but haven't been able to yet.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
