Default 2182: Differential Noise/Axle Play Diagnosis

Thought I would share what is a first for me as far as rear-end failures go.

We picked up a 2182 last year and one of the first things I noticed was that when I'd engage from a dead stop, it felt sloppy. Watching the rear wheels on takeoff, I noticed some excessive axial movement. I jacked up the rear and found what I assumed was bad axle bearings.

Upon the initial teardown, though I found this. I will need to pull the rear and do a further teardown to be sure, but it appears that the differential carrier housing is no longer connected to the carrier bearing and has cracked/broken.

Will update once I have a chance to pull for full teardown. Just wanted to share what seems like a rare failure mode to be aware of when you are purchasing a used Cyclops (or others that use the same diff internals, including the Cyclops GT and a good portion of the 82 Series).

This was also out of a 2182, the bearing bolts were loose and one was cross threaded from the factory. Quality was not job one at MTD.

Its not really a big job, I'm betting its the tapered roller bearing and race.
if your lucky and no damage is done to the carrier or the housing, its just a bearing change and setting the ring/pinion backlash and carrier preload with the adjustment shims.


IIRR their is an interchange with early Mopar rear ends on the little Dodges.
So Rock auto is your friend on bearing/cups rather than OEM CUB $$$$$
Just check the bearing numbers.

From what I can see without having pulled the diff, it looks worse than a simple failed bearing. I can shift the carrier with my left hand and look down the axle tube and see the carrier move independently of the bearings. It's a good 1/2" of play. Will post back with results of the teardown.

Pretty busy with customer machines for the next few weeks, hoping to get a chance to work on it some time soon.
