Weight options
After mounting the 450 blower on my 1882 I realize I need some rear weight. I'd like to hear of some of your ideas on building a removable (in summer) weight box? for the back end. I don't have a 3 point and could add a simple ball hitch to the weight box if I feel I need one. I know wheel weights and loaded tires would be one choice, but to buy enough cast weights seems to be very expensive compared to welding up something. Your thoughts please.

Most will recommend that you fill the tires and add wheel weights, when you hang a weight box on the back it puts unnecessary stress on the axles and bearing but with filled tires and wheel weights no stress is added. I can usually find the cement filled plastic weights on Craigslist for dirt cheap, they range from 30 to 75lbs each so try to find a set of heavy ones and call it a job.

Thanks Olds, never gave any thought to the strain on the axle.

Doc, I would have to say x3 of what has been said above. I just did this a couple weeks ago to a set of rears wheels for my 782. Each wheel went from mid-30 lb range dry to 90+ tubed and filled (rv antifreeze). Add the 75 lbs rear wheel weights and the back end of the machine is gonna have some grunt to it.
I believe the term used is "rolling mass," which is a theme also used in tractor pulling as well. Good luck to ya.

The advantage of mounting weights behind the rear axle is the teeter totter effect will transfer weight from the front wheels to the rear wheels. A hundred lbs on the back of the tractor might actually add 130lbs to the rear wheels and just as importantly take some weight off the front wheels.
Unless you'll be using it for 100s of hours weighted down wear on the axle bearings is going to be a non issue. |

Ill go along with that, no worse than a 3pt mounted tiller

Yeah, but you don't drive around with a tiller on. Generally, it's in the ground.
I have fluid filled tires and wheel weights. Run them year round. |

I have filled tires ( pic taken before I installed the chains ) and that works great with my 125 using the QA-42 I also picked up a pair of 75 lb Gilson wheel weights too. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
