sticking valve
I have a 125 hydro that I mow with. After I mow for a while I get popping/backfire sound. I haven't been putting any Lead additive in my gas. Could this be my problem or should I look deeper?

It could be a sticking valve, it could be something else!!
For a sticking valve, the best remedy is to ream the valve guide. A possible bandage fix (temporary) is to add 2 ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil to the engine oil. The MMO may help for years. The something else could be an old coil that is giving out, or the points could be out of time. |

I would suggest you trying this........
Mix with your Gas and add to crankcase.

I'd also pull the tins off the engine and make sure it's clean and check your jetting. The older engines were never designed for gas with ethanol and the ethanol makes engines run lean and causes over heating.

Odds are a valve is sticking. Without knowing the Cub's past history it is hard to say when any service work such as decarboning the head or oil changes were done. Leaded fuel, fuel with MTBE and fuel over 30 days old can lead to a valve sticking. Areas I would check: 1. How fresh is the fuel? 2. How old is the spark plug, points and condenser? 3. Plug and Point gap set per Kohler specs? 4. How old is the battery? 5. champion spark plug? I had problems with champion plugs in the past. I've had good results with Autolite spark plugs. Kohler engines are design to run on unleaded fuel. Leaded fuel will leave deposits on the valves. As stated earlier MMO in your fuel helps to prevent carbon buildup. |

I have a similair issue with my 1872. It runs fine for 30 minutes and then just quits, no running rough for a few seconds prior to quiting, it just quits. It will not start for another 30-45 minutes, and then will start and run fine for another 20-30 minutes, until we start the process all over again.
This sound like a stuck valve ? |

You should check for spark when it quits, sounds like a coil getting hot.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
