Default Kohler Courage SV590S, idle adjustment

I have a cub cadet riding lawn mower with a Kohler courage engine; Engine model number: SV590S and the spec number is: SV590-0220. Carb was leaking so I got a carburetor kit and installed it. Upon starting the mower it was running really erratically; high and low idling and very noisy. I’m trying to adjust the idle screws but the mower now won’t start unless I use starting fluid and it’s hard to keep it running to be able to adjust the screws. I looked at the service manual online and on one page it mentions something about a “governed idle speed adjustment (if equipped).” Does this engine have that? It also mentions the “low idle speed (RPM) adjustment”. Is this the adjustment I use? Do I need a tachometer make this adjustment or to read the RPM’s?

First,
Welcome to occ!
Just a guess here, but if the carb. worked correctly except for a leak,
and you installed a rebuild kit,and now it is not working as it should.
I would go back through your work looking for some mistake or an omitted adjustment.
in the service manual there should be settings for the idle screw mixture.
Most newer carbs have no high speed mixture screw but some have a solenoid
valve that needs power applied and it has to work properly.
possible the float is mis adjusted?
As far as the governor, most all carbs are controlled by a gov.so they respond to load and your selected throttle speed.

Default Idles low in high and idles too high in low how to adjust

I have a Kohler 19 Cub Cadet XTL 1040 and just replaced the carb and now it idles just right in high gear but idles way too fast, even faster than high gear in low. How do I fix this?

Believe it or not I just fixed this same problem on my Kohler Courage this morning. You have to remove the hood and air cleaner assembly first. Yes, it is the low idle adjustment screw, simply turn it counter clockwise using a wrench or pliers, with the engine running, until it is sounding better. Before that though, check the condition of the fuel filter and air cleaner to make sure that they’re not the problem. Hope that helps.

Here’s a picture I took depicting the adjustment.

I have the same motor on my MTD lawn tractor. I had issues with the carb and replaced the carb with an el-cheapo Amazon carburetor. New carb fixed the old carb problems but created a new problem: surging at idle. Surging mid-throttle and surging full throttle. Fixed surging with replacement Kohler gasket (P/N: 20-041-18-S).

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
