rebuilding kohler 17
What can you do to these engines. I am going to shave the head, not sure on how much yet. What valve to head clearance do you guys run? I am really just want to bump the compression some. I do have a mv 18, are the engines the same ?
anything would be great. I am not going to pull with this but this seems to be the place to ask. thanks |

just think about a few things before you decide to build a KT. these things had trouble staying together mowing lawns. no one makes aftermarket parts, you can get cams. but that's really about it. and in all my years of pulling I haven't seen one that really runs excellent. consider building a Kohler flat head single or a Kohler V twin .. in the long run you'll be money ahead.

It has 1330 hours on it, i decided to pull the engine and freshen it up. still going to shave the head, hone and do a nice valve job. I do all of the work myself.

I have a kohle magnum 18 .10 over wth new pistons and a valve job and the carb played wth. Iv pulled wth it for 4 years and have yet to have any trouble. Runs like a top and no lack of power. Iv placed 4th out of 15 to 20 tractors all different engine types. Bt in order to get more im stepping up to a vtwin

from what I've seen over the years the Kohler singles pretty much smoke the opposed twins. in fact its hard to even find an opposed twin pulling up here anymore. the V twins are far superior than the opposed .
small engine warehouse offers some nice compete ready to drop in swaps for V twins, this one use's a vanguard engine. expensive but you'll have a nice package when done. rebuild is much cheaper. http://www.smallenginewarehouse.com/...-782-Category/ |

You can drop just about anything in your frame, Kohler Mag18, Mag20, Command CH 18 CH 22 or bigger. Vanguards ETC. Question I have for you is why would you want to use a Hydro for a puller?

the best thing you can do is mow grass with the kt17. we have two of them and i hear all the time what junk they are. but for mowing grass i never had a problem i service them reguarly and keep oil level checked. but for pulling i have never seen any around here work well.

as long as you had a flat yard and no ditch to mow they held up. most of them died while sidehill mowing the ditch.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
