Default bolts

Hello, What size bolts do you use to bolt a ring gear to a two piece carrier? I'm thinking 5/16x1 or 11/4 fine thread with steel lock nuts. I did one 3 years ago and have forgotten, i need to get a couple sets. Thanks Mike

I used 5/16 x 1 1/2" I think. Grade 8 fine thread bolts. I then cut off what stuck through the nut and welded the nut to the bolt.

OK I gotta ask, why would you weld the nut to the bolt? Red Loc-Tite is more than enough.

Because the way I see it. If I ever had to take them off I would be replace them anyway. And this way I know there is no chance of one coming out. Cheap insurance IMO.

Sure hope you are just messing up the threads a bit with the welder.
Because if you are getting them hot, the bolt becomes brittle, and streaches.
thread locker is more than enough with no drawbacks.

5/16 fine thread grade 8 , 1 inch long with lock nuts and a dab of locktite. I use those same bolts for a fine spline or a dart setup. if you can find them in a allen head it makes installation a little easier since its difficult to tighten or hold the nut or bolt on the ring gear side. I had ground down a socket for clearance since there are so many running around with hex bolts in them

Thanks Don, i've been to a few NQS pulls in our state over the years that i knew you were there. Wanted to meet you but never made the connection. I live real close to Mr.N and he's helped me out on a couple. He gave me the bolts for the first one. I've bought gears, shafts and things off him. Thanks again, Mike

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
