Frustrating Horizontal Kohler Command
So, I was cleaning the GT 2000 up today to put away for the winter and accidentally made a super mess out of my current situation. As I was taking the wing nut off the air cleaner assembly, I heard it drop, but I couldn't find it. I figured it would show up somewhere--and it did in the worse kind of way. So, I changed the oil, put on a new oil filter, put on a new air filter, added some Stabil, and took it outside to run it to get a good indicator of the oil level. A few minutes later, I heard this loud banging sound and shortly thereafter the engine started to surge. I figured out where the darn wing nut went. On this tractor, there are 4 holes around the air cleaner. The wing nut went down the back right hole and into the fan/screen housing. It took some time getting the screen off and finding the wing nut, but now, I can't seem to get the screen back on the engine with all the numerous parts--washers, spacers, ring, and then screen. Anyone know of any tricks or tips to accomplish this task or does the engine have to be taken out?

Sometimes a dab of grease holds things in place long enough to get it together. Just thinking about it, a hot glue gun would quickly hold parts together for assembly for engine external applications.

Just another frustration to add. When I had all of the pieces in place, I attempted to start one of the screws/bolts, but I couldn't get the darn thing started. While I was doing this, one of the spaces fell into the shroud housing area which took over an hour to get. I fear the only way to get the screen assembly on is to take off the shroud off which looks like that requires the engine to be lifted. If I spent all day trying to toss that wing nut into one of those holes, I wouldn't have been able to do it, but today the #!=/&$# thing found it on its own.

Sounds like it's time to walk away for the day and try to work on the problems tomorrow. If I don't do that when I get that frustrated I start smashing and throwing things. Gotta love tempers...

Yeah I'd step back take a day off from it , think about your problem and encourage yourself to fix it. Tell yourself you can , calm down relax and go back after a day or two.

If it was my tractor I'd pull the engine and remove the blower housing so that you can check for damage to the blower and the wiring. It's not all that hard to do on a 2000.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I think I will give it another shot tomorrow. Sam, I am also wondering if the blower got damaged in the process. I also have lost 2 small washers that were on the end of the spacers. I fear they are in the blower housing area. I have to say I never had this issue with a vertical Kohler engine.

You are not the only one that has dropped something down in a blower housing.

Before I would pull it apart I would try a small magnet on a string or shove a small hose with a shop vac hooked up and see if you can fish it out. Can't you just pull the flywheel screen off and get it out?
