First Time Buyer!
Hi All,
I'm a long time fan of Cub Cadets. I finally talked my wife into letting me buy one. I have my eye on a 1979 982 with the Cat 0 Pt hitch and the rear PTO. Images are attached. The Guys selling says it's a good candidate for a restoration. Needs a little work all around but the engine is running. I was wondering what would something like this be worth? I would just likes some help so I'm not crazy over paying for it. |

First off, welcome aboard!
If you're a first time buyer and considering a 982, I can say you have good taste. Great in fact that it has a 3pt and PTO! As for price, it is very location dependent. You'll get prices all over the place here but to me, as rare as that is, I still wouldn't pay over $1500 - $2000 if it's just the tractor. The 3pt figure is worth about $500 as they can be bought now for about that price, the PTO is a good $500 so that just leaves the tractor & deck. Cosmetic looks ok, a bit worn but aren't they all, and if the engine runs good (make sure before you buy) then I could see between $750 and $1000 for the tractor...ish. Decks...they're a dime a dozen so I don't put much value there. Then again, that's just me. As always, it's worth what you're willig to pay for it!

Hey Ryan,
Thank you for the quick reply. At least I have a Clue now! Yea I have done my research and have been torn as what is best to get. I had been looking at several 1650's in my area when I ran into the 982. From what I have read, this setup is pretty rare. I also found a CCC 982 for anyone that's interested. http://nwct.craigslist.org/grd/4956781083.html It have a Kolher Magnum 18 engine in it. I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing. |

X-2 As Ryan said......
But any of the three are nice "looking", but that red 982 IS a NICE candidate.. Just remember, the first one is the beginning of a life long addiction

Thanks guys for the support.. I have reached an agreement with the owner.. I have to take a 3 1/2 hr. drive each way to go pick it up this weekend. I'll get it washed up and take some pictures to share once it gets to it's new home.

1200 I talked him down from 1500. I think I made a good deal and it comes with a bunch of Misc parts. So hopefully I have everything I need to to get it looking proper.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
