108 poor running
I put an o ring on the throttle shaft to fix the air leak and now it won't run right. It won't rev and has a lot of backfiring in the exhaust, like it actually shoots little flames. It pretty much quit running before I added the o ring. I tried messing with the mixture screw but it won't run right. It now runs with the choke all the way off whereas before it needed about half choke to run. I don't. Know if this is mixture problems or mechanical. Any thoughts? Also will battery voltage make a difference? The charging system is not working so I just run it of the battery, but as a side note it did run ok before on just the battery. I recently changed the condenser, spark plug, air filter, and added the o ring. I changed all these after it quit running.

welcome to occ lee, hawaii huh. i spent a little time over their, well 3 years, schofield barracks. i am not sure where you put the o ring on the the throttle shaft? i would clean the carb and rebuild it, you should not need to run it with the choke on, if you do you need to adjust your carb, your not gettin enough fuel. try settin the main a 2 1/4 and the air at 1 3/4, that is a good starting point. after you clean your carb.

I did clean the carb once. Which adjustment screw is which? There is a vertical and one that is angled closer to the block. I tried. Setting at 2 and 1 1/2 but it ain't right. The o ring is at the top of the carb where the throttle shaft goes into the carb.

the main is on top and the mixture is on the side at the angle. i would pull your main sounds to me like it is dirty or bent. where you put the o ring they make a brass bushing for that, i dont know the part number i am sure some one else does.

How do I set the timing? I'll check the jets. What is the top adjustment for? What does it adjust?

The top screw is the high rpm/load air/fuel adjustment. The angled screw is the idle air fuel adjustment.
You can read how to set the timing here: http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=4405 The O-ring on the throttle shaft is the wrong way to fix that. Here is the right way: http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...+shaft+bushing That'll get you started. Let us know how it turns out. |

Thanks guys it runs like new. Started on the first crank. Timing was off by about 2" on the crank. I don't even know how it was still running like that. Thanks

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
