1782 drive shaft issue
I have a 1991 1782 diesel garden tractor that stripped the splines off of the front end of the drive shaft in the CV joint. I was lucky enough to find a NOS from a cub dealer in Indiana. I installed the new drive shaft and upon starting it is making all kinds of racket and I notice a wobble in the rear CV joint at the hydro pump connection. Obviously this is a problem. Does anyone have any suggestions?

1782 drive shaft issue
Sounds like a worn rear CV joint. Did you disassemble both joints, clean and check for wear before reinstalling and greasing the drive shaft? Balls and/or housing could be worn or damaged. May need a replacement. If your front splines were damaged, more than likely the rear joint suffered some damage as well.
How many hours are on the meter? Maybe your 1782 had a hard life? |

Drive shaft issue
Everything is new. I disassembled, cleaned and regressed everything. From the motor output to the hydro I put is brand new. That is why I am completely confused. I suppose one of the new CV joints is bad but because this is now an obsolete part I doubt I can get lucky enough to find another one and $400 once is bad enough. I might have to get creative and fabricate my own driveshaft and use an automotive uoint.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
