Hi,
Today pulling cart with 1450. I noticed rolling / knocking noise from engine. Noise was not very strong but I could hear it. Noise frequency went up and down with engine RPM. Could this be something serious like con rod or main bearings going ? Tero |

Hmmm... I believe I found reason for this. It is that starter bendix/gear does not like to come off from flywheel gear(stays on) Issue is mechanical. So I would like to know is it time for a completely new starter or is just rebuild kit with brushes bendix and bushings enough?

Take the starter off and clean the shaft that the gear is on and then spray it down with silicon or oil. It should snap back once you do this. The return spring might be weak also so check it.

When I got my 1200, the bendix was the worst problem, but it tended to stay disengaged no matter how much cleaning and oiling I did. Eventually, I won, and it gave in and worked properly. Try some EZ slide. I almost emptied my first can, and its not on my mower deck yet. I use it on everything that does not have grease fittings but should..... Next time I pull my motor, Im coating the driveshaft with it.

I cleaned the starter on my 1250 during the winter. I was using it for snow blowing but the starter would jam when trying to start the engine. The starter was really easy to clean. I used http://cubfaq.com/kstarter.html to help me, but I didn't need to bend the wrench, a regular socket worked and I used an impact gun to get the nut holding the bendix gear off.
After I did this it never had a problem even on the coldest days of the winter. |

Hi,
Did some oiling and cleaning today. And I noticed that there is something wrong with bendix it slips both directions. But it seems that this 13 tooth bendix is hard to find. I have checked Ebay and CCspecialties but neither seems to have these. If I understand correctly Kohler no is KH-47-749-02 anyone know where to find one? Tero |

The part number has changed to: Kohler # KH-45-755-16-S
Just do a google search and you should see several places with them for sale. Prices seem to vary all over the place.

What do you mean it slips both ways? It should move both forward and back on the shaft, there is a spring that returns it back away from the flywheel. Is this what is happening or am I misunderstanding you?

Bendix gear rotates freely to both CW and CCW directions. Bendix is a two part unit (inner part with threads that slide on starter shaft and outer part with gear) If I lock inner part with threads and rotate gear with hand it rotates in both directions(when bendix is off from starter) Is this how it should work? OR should there be a one-way clutch inside bendix gear?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
