I have a 1440 with about 860 hours on it. It has not been used on a regular basis for the last 5-6 years and I am now getting ready to start using it again now that we are finishing our yard.
I dropped it off at the shop last week and they are telling me it is going to be about $950 to fix it and get it back up to par. They are saying it needs a center seal on the rear end so they were going to replace all of the seals while they are doing it. They were also including a tune up, changing two idler pulleys on the deck, new blades and adjusting the brakes and front end. Does this price sound reasonable? The machine is really in good physical condition and they are telling me the motor is in good shape. Are there any other things I should be concerned with? Thanks for your advice. |

![]() ![]() I think that's a bit high. The idler pulleys you can get good used ones and do the work yourself for less. Just replace the seal that needs to be replaced if no need in fixing something that's not broke. The brakes are an easy adjustment that you can do while the deck is off for the idler pulleys. The seals are going to cost over $100 just in parts and the labor is really adding to the total cost. ![]() |

Get you a good service manual and do the work yourself. It is much more satisfying and you know for a fact the work was done and done right. That price is way out of the ball park. Just my opinion.

I am in the Central MA area. Does your friend in CT have a shop?
I also forgot to mention that they also included replacing the HST Fan as the fins snapped off due to having 3 snapped bolts that hold the rear end in place. Does anyone know of anything else I should check/replace on this before I start using it on a regular basis? |

Well I finally got it back today. They ended up doing 5 seals in the rear end, hydro fan new pulleys on the mower, oil change and many adjustments. They billed me for 8.3 hours labor but told me they had more than that on It. Seems to be running like a top now. Can't wait to get out and use it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
