Default Cub Cadet 1806 Transmission Issues

I was givin a Cub 1806 with a pull behind as a new home onwer present from a relative and the thing is a little rough. When I got it last weekend, it only worked in 1st & reverse. This past weekend I was pulling a cart with it, and I slipped/grinded it into 1st. When I put it into neutral to load the cart, 1st & reverse didn't work anymore. Now 2nd & 3rd worked which sucked because i really need reverse. I slipped/grinded into 2nd, put it in neutral, tried 1st, and it worked. Now 1st & reverse are currently working. Does anyone know what is causing this? My first thought is there is a clutch engagement issue, but than again I'm no mechanic. If it helps, the creeper gear will not engage either. Any help would be great

Also, the deck that came with it is shot. It needs more weld than not. If anyone would have one and would be willing to part with it please let me know. I live near Chippewa, Pa.

Sounds like possibly two problems.... Id start with taking the tunnel cover off and see if the driveshaft stops turning when you step on the clutch. If not, see why the clutch isn't disengaging... As far as, why it wouldn't go into first or reverse... You may a detent sticking in the shifter top....... But your description contradicts itself, did it "slide in" or "grind in" ... it really cant do both. It will either be sliding into gear, or it will be grinding into gear....

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
