Default Hello from a New old Cub owner

I have recently purchased a Cub Cadet 1440. I got it for 300 and everything works so far all though its very slow in reverse and hardly moves backward at all if on a incline. I put new headlight lens and a new rear deck wheel. I have not done anything else to mower so I appreciate any suggestions on things I need to check or do since this is my first Cub. Its Model # 143-633-100, Serial #836402, and MFG date J232G2. The Deck is 42" GT Deck 320190 serial # 419032 and MFG date K182G4. I don't know year of manufacturer Cub dealer said early 90s. I ordered a owners manual and I plan to repaint it in the winter as it has a few spots where paint chipped off. The hydro drive is new to me so that is going to take some getting use to. Supposedly the oil, belts and filters were just changed before purchase. Thanks for looking and any and all info appreciated. BTW I was thinking of getting a lawnsweeper for it if you guys have any opinions on those.

Welcome to OCC

Pull the cover and see if the linkage is moving all the way when you put it in reverse. Make sure it has fresh oil and the proper filter.

Best place to post questions for your tractor is the CCC/MTD section.

Welcome and good luck with your 1440!

But be careful, the CC bug is a dangerous one

Welcome to OCC! You would love a lawn sweeper. They are great for picking up leaves, small sticks, pine straw and other yard debris. I've had one for almost nine years and love it!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
