About six months ago I was driving to my parents house and in a small town about 100 miles for me, I saw a 1512 that looked like it was left for dead. No one was around so I left a note with my number on one of the vehicles that looked like it still drove. I never heard anything from them. Since then I have driven by it 5 or so times hoping to see someone so I could try and buy it. Well this past sunday my wife and I decided to go and have lunch with my mother so we drove through this town hoping to see someone and finally the guy was there. I approached him and asked him what the deal was with the old cub, and he said he used it for about 15 years to mow, and then he upgraded a year or two ago and tried to sell it at a swap meet, but he could not get it running. He was asking 1000 for it at the swap meet, but he said he doesn't want to mess with any more so he would let it go for $500. I gave it a quick once over and told him sold. The only problem was I didn't have my truck so I told him I would setup a time this week to pick it up. I was very anxious to get it so he didn't change his mind so I made the decision to pick it up the following day. Monday eve I left about 4 and drove in a snow storm 200 mile round trip, and after a tough time loading it with two flat tires in the cold blowing snow with no lights I was back on the road with my new treasure. I made it home about 10:30 last night, but it was worth it.
The tractor is beat up, its missing the right side cover, it doesn't run, and it has 1750 hours, but the engine rolls over, it has dual hydraulics, and the fluids looked good, and it is full of nice green coolant. It also came with a decent 44c deck with front wheels. The main purpose for buying this tractor is to use the engine and hydraulics and other good pieces to convert my 982 to a 982D. Hopefully I can get it running quickly to figure out the health of the engine and then I will pull it apart and start the conversion. Then I will most likely sell off the other parts I don't need. I have been watching CTRUEX 's 982D build so I am very excited to get going on this one. ![]() ![]()

Thanks, I was really excited to get it. I was planning on spending a boat load of money on a new v-twin for the 982, but now if this one runs I will have a red smoker for possibly less money.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
