Exclamation Low Ash Oil

O.K. you've probably answered this question a million times by now, but here goes anyway.

Must I use "low-ash" SAE 30 motor oil in my Cub Cadet Garden Tractor as prescribed in the owners manual or is this a standard from an earlier time when oils were lower quality? If so then what brand is recommended and where can I buy it? Is there such a thing as a fully synthetic SAE 30 oil as I here synthetics are extremely "low-ash"?

I own a 1978 IHCC 1450 with a Kohler engine.

I run valvoline conventional and haven't had an issue, i believe you'll get a bunch of different answer to your question but i think it comes down the personal preference.

Most SAE30 oils have some sort of Ash content. Both Cub Cadet & Kohler back in the day, recommended a "low ash oil".

Seems the oils (SAE30) of today, will work just fine.

I too like timbo2, run 30wt Napa in the spring, summer and fall. Switch to 10W30 Napa the winter.

Case-IH still carries the low ash oil. My 2072 has never had anything else in it. When I worked at the IH dealer where my dad worked, they had customers that swore by it, claiming their Cadet would burn oil if they used regular 30W. MOST of their customers used regular 30W, not the low-ash due to the cost. IH had a travelling school once on their different lubricating products, my dad attended one. Last year Antique Power or Heritage Iron ran an article about the various IH lubricants going into great details about each one. I think Low Ash is better than ordinary 30W, but is not required.

i personally run mobil1's V-twin oil,(in summer)..it is a 20-50w, but the high zddp content is a must for flat tappet motors..plus, an air cooled motor is the perfect application for a synthetic oil...just my opinion of course

I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone else mention it yet: I use Shell Rotella 30w and have had nothing but good luck with it.

I've been using Rottela 15W/40 for about 20 years and haven't had any luck, good or bad. Just like the Engergizer Bunny. Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'!

I use it in all my small engines and a number of old cars I have. The reason I started using it in everything was because I bought a PowerStroke Ford in '95 and a diesel Kubota at the same time. Both took diesel oil. I don't like a bunch of different kinds of oil stacked around the place.

I believe the Rotella T is low ash oil.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
