Hello all -
I started to tear down the command CH22 in my 2284. This thing has been up and down since I got it 4 years ago. Lately its been unable to make much power and would die when I turned on the PTO for the mower deck, and the deck spun up fine on a different tractor. Right spark plug very oily and gunked up. Compression 150 PSI on Cyl# 1. 140 on #2 I have the engine out. these commands are abit lighter than the mags so I can handle them without a lift. See in the pic that there are 2 different types of coils. That seems like it would be a problem but I wanted some other input. Partstree says that coil should be 24-584-36 which is the bigger one on the right. ![]() cyl #1 - yuck ![]() Rods look ok not bent

Before you start throwing parts at it, have the SAM module tested. Do you have the service manual for the CH?

Thanks Sam,
I do have the manual and haven't tested the SAM because I thought it required a specific tester. I did all the resistance tests on the coils shown on page 8.10. The coils passed all those tests for their respective models.

Two different Ignition Mags...........
![]() I am thinking that is not correct. It would "appear" to me, the RH pictured is not right.

You do need the Kohler tester. I'm thinking it may be worth a few bucks to have it tested by a Kohler shop that has the equipment and knows what they are doing.

I think I have a used coil for a SAM engine in the shop. I took it off a CH22 that originally came in a 2284. The wiring in that engine was a mess. I ended up removing the SAM stuff and just put set of CH18 coils on it. It ran decent but not great after that. It really also needed the flywheel for the 18 to get the timing correct. I ended up putting a brand new CH22 in that tractor. The new engine did not have the SAM ignition. Anyway if you want the coil PM me your mailing address and I'll mail it to you for the cost of the shipping.

Thanks guys-
Yes that smaller coil was my first thought. That SAM module is the wild card in these things though, wish they would have kept it simple. Thanks Sam, sending PM-

Yeah but the other keys are finding someone around here who 'knows what they are doing' and for 'a few bucks' regardng the SAM. If matching up the coils doesn't help then on to the SAM.
Fun continues - thanks again!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
