I got my 12 hp Kohler fired up in my 122 tonight. Fired right up with a battery on the plugs and points that were in it. I've got some smoke puffs when I rev it up. That's the only time it smokes. Would be indicative of a rebuild needed? Or just a fresh tune up? I'm new to these motors.

My way of thinking is.....if you rebuild it, taking you time to cover all the bases, doing a really good job, then you know you have a good engine that may last another 40 years.

that's always a tough one. kinda depends on what you plan on doing with it, if there's any faint knocking that could be a loose rod or piston slap, you run it to long and a rod breaks and does extra damage then you're bummed, like Roland mentioned, rebuild it correctly and you don't have to worry for allot of years if you take care of it.

I gotta agree with the above posts, if they don't have any noises in them they will run and smoke for a long, long time.
If you do a good job rebuilding it, it will be like new and you won't have to worry about it for a very long time.

Mine smokes upon start, and burns a bit of oil. It does not knock (yet, knock on wood.) It's still good to go IMO.

Is the smoke blue or black, when you accelerate? Blue is oil. Black is too rich fuel mixture.

I guess to me it would depend on what your plans are for it. If it will be used as a regular worker like mowing lawns and plowing snow or what not I would just go ahead and give her a decent rebuild and be done with it.
Just occasional use I might just leave it alone and drive it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
