Default 680 Hydro HELP!!

I bought a 1982 model 680 142 U off of CL this past winter. The seller stated that the PTO shut down after an hour of hard use. How bad could that be I thought to myself? lol He was right... it did. The tractor bogged down to nothing while going up a slight grade with the PTO engaged. It was throttled up 100% at the time. After it ran for 30min the motor just cut out. It could be restarted... then it would cut out again till it cooled.

I just spent 800 dollars at a local dealer for a new pto unit.

It does exactly the same thing now.

I wanted this beast so I could mow and make a few bucks to support all my other bad habits but my return on this investment is already at the breaking point.

There are threads out there with this issue .... but I never found any definitive resolutions.

My issue is this: If you guys can detail a reasonably cost effective repair then I will carry on. If not I really need to take the loss and make this thing go away. The engine starts and runs easily. It looks decent..

I will happily post any photos you guys require.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Rick

Rick, 800 was too much for a PTO. You could have got a used one for 50 or a new PTO for around 200. But it is too late for that so could you explain your phrase above a little better? I cannot get my tired brain to understand that that means. I think with all of us here we can help you.

You came to the right place Rick. Sounds like you have a fuel issue or an ignition issue. What engine does your tractor have in it?

$800?!?!?!??!?!?!? They saw you coming!!!
The PTO sells direct from CCC for $613.92. Here, check it out. Item #1, click "add to cart" and it will give you the price:

So, the PTO shuts off? Or the engine dies? If the engine dies, why the heck would you replace the PTO????

When the tractor has been working for 30 min or so, with the PTO engaged, it will suddenly stall. If I turn the PTO off it will restart. but only sluggishly. If I let the tractor cool it will restart with more vigor and I can continue mowing.

I hope that is more descriptive?

I thought the engine was bogging down under the load of a malfunctioning PTO. The PTO does not shut down.

So not only did I vastly overpay (the PTO was 600 with labor and a couple maint repairs) I probably left them with a perfectly good PTO to add to their inventory. I will be discussing this with them. Will there be any kind of resolution? Nope.

Pretty much indefinitly. Sometimes it has a really hard time starting tho. Its like its not getting enough spark... i get black smoke and kind of a fluttering, belching no idle situation till it sorts itself out. This doesnt happen all the time.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
