I've read several great threads on rebuilding the Ross steering box used on wide frame models (1650). Is there a good source for the ball bearings, felt seal, and cam follower pin? I can probably machine the pin, but the balls are corroded and should be replaced. The felt seal on the cover plate is torn also.

I heard the other day Jd 110 used the same box and cheaper. I pulled apart an Allis Chalmers 416 years ago that had a lot beefier type cage but I havn't had a chance to see if thier still available.

I've read that the internal parts are the same for the JD 110 or similar models. Not sure the exact model.
Part number I saved: Taper Stud - M42260 Plug, Adjusting - M43745 Seal, Foam - M41917 Cap, Steering Wheel Assy - M43800 Bearing Kit - AM30867 I need to get these to rebuild the column in my 1450, but haven't been down to the Deere dealer to check costs yet. Im afraid my shoes will melt if I pass through the door there. j/k...

I have this same project in front of me, if the problem is play in the steering shaft. I have not dug into it yet as I'm stuck working on so many other things ( just on the 1450 !!) and my main hang up at the moment is rebuilding the drive shaft etc. Does anyone have a link or pictures of what exactly goes wrong with the shaft causing all the play?
Are the bearings special, if not one could easily cross reference the number, other than that looks to be special items. |

I have had great luck with Mr. Louderback's work and his auction site store. He built me a custom steering box that added an additional turn lock-to-lock which eases turning effort substantially when using front implements or weights. |

The guys are correct about the JD parts being the same, and they are quite a lot cheaper than buying from the Cub store.
klejeune, if you keep your Cub Cadet key in your pocket while you are in the JD store, and rub it like a lucky rabbits foot, your shoes WILL NOT melt. drysumpjet, is also correct, Mr. Louderback does very good work. |

All that play in the driveshaft is usually caused by the self-aligning bushing that gets worn out. The ends of your driveshaft may be worn down from all the play.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
